Your First Driving Lesson: How to Prepare and What to Expect

Preparing for your first driving lesson? Discover what you need before starting, how to choose a good driving instructor, what happens during your first lesson and whether you should practise with a parent first. This guide from Halfpenny School of Motoring helps new learners begin safely, confidently and with a clear plan.

Should I have a driving lesson before practising with a parent?

In most cases, Brad recommends beginning with a professional driving lesson. This allows a qualified instructor to introduce safe routines and vehicle control in a dual-controlled car. Learning the correct routines from the beginning can also reduce the chance of developing habits that may need correcting later. Private practice can then reinforce those skills once the learner is ready.

Do I need to pass my theory test before starting driving lessons?

No. You can begin practical driving lessons before passing the theory test, although starting your theory preparation early can help you understand road signs, hazards and driving decisions during lessons.

What do I need for my first driving lesson?

You will need a valid provisional driving licence and any glasses or contact lenses required for driving. Wear comfortable clothing and secure shoes that allow you to operate the pedals safely. You should also consider taking a bottled drink.
